Beyond the Basics: The Fundamentals of Fiction Writing is a school-year fiction course for middle and high school hobby writers. In the course, students learn essential elements of storytelling, develop a strong fiction premise, and find clarity on how writing fits into their life. The course is taught by a K-12 homeschool graduate who understands fiction writing as a serious hobby and provides encouraging, valuable support via email–making it an especially good fit for parents who want to support a young writer but don’t feel confident teaching writing themselves.
Beyond the Basics: The Fundamentals of Fiction Writing is a basic course for student hobby writers who want to learn more about writing without spending a fortune for extras they don’t need.
From August to early May, students will learn about the fundamentals of fiction writing one week at a time. They’ll learn how to craft characters, shape plots, build worlds, and much more.
The end goal for this course is to leave students with an understanding of essential writing skills, a developed fiction story premise, a stronger support network, and a clear view on how writing fits into their life.
This course isn’t taught by a professional author or editor. Instead, it’s taught by a hobby writer just like your student, who is passionate about the things she’s teaching.
If you’re looking for a writing course for your student that’s practical, affordable, and encouraging, you’re in the right place.
Your teacher will talk to you and your group on a video call each month, asking and answering all your writing questions. In addition, your teacher can be reached by email at any time.
Each week contains only one lesson and one exercise, and the fourth week of the month is a catch-up week. You choose when to do the lesson and exercise each week. There is also extra content for fifth weeks of the month.
Many writing courses come with extras you won't use. This course is simply the lessons, exercises, and calls, with the accountability and teaching you need.
If you're concerned about online access for your student, this is the perfect course. An email address is all you need, as all the lessons are written in a PDF. There will be a video call at the end of every month, but their face does not have to be shown and a parent is welcome to sit in and listen.
Each exercise has been carefully chosen to correspond with the lesson and are challenging, yet not to a degree of frustration.
Every month, you'll join a group video call to discuss the lessons and exercises. Within these calls, you can exchange ideas and advice from the others taking the course. As well, we have two lessons on finding strong support for your writing journey!
Every month focuses on a theme, with a new topic each week. For the first three weeks of each month, you’ll receive an email with a written lesson, writing exercise, timesheet, and checklist. The fourth week is a catch-up week, and we’ll have a group video call on Friday to discuss the lessons and have a Q&A. On the occasional fifth weeks, you’ll receive more content, which will support you further on your writing journey.
